Elizabeth McGriggs was born on July 9, 1929, in Vicksburg, Mississippi to Rev. Ben Johnson and Mary London Johnson. She attended Vicksburg Schools and graduated from Bowman High School.

Elizabeth met and later married Johnnie McGriggs. The couple later relocated to Cleveland, Ohio where she then began working as a Teacher for Cleveland Independent School District. She was a beloved Teacher and mentor for the students at John W. Raper until she later retired.

Mrs. Elizabeth remained in Ohio until 2019 when she relocated to Garland, Texas to live with her beloved daughter Elizabeth. To know her was to lover her. She met no stranger and was loving and devoted to family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Johnnie McGriggs, five sisters Pinkie White, Ledora Miles, Margie Woodson, Mildred Trammell and Odessa Johnson, five brothers Jessie Johnson,Sr., James Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Ben Johnson Jr., and David Johnson.

Those left to celebrate her life and legacy are, a devoted daughter Elizabeth Jeter of Garland, TX; stepdaughter  Brenda Cook of Cleveland, Ohio; two special nieces: Candice Johnson of Atlanta, GA, and India Johnson of Detroit MI; two granddaughters: Trimone (Dedrick) Washington of Wylie, TX, and Ithaya Maddox of Cleveland, OH; one brother Willie (Regina) Johnson of Tampa, Fl; one sister Rosie L. Brown of Vicksburg, Ms; special cousin Mollie Hollway; four great-grandchildren; Semaj, Choizen, Mikalah and Emberlei; Goddaughter Karen Casey, and  many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved very much.
