Mr. George Elliott Merritt was born on January 18, 1937, in Crockett, Texas to Mr. James Elliott Merritt and Ms. Jessie Mae Elaim. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Bethel Baptist Church of Crockett, Texas under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Dowell.

George received his education in the Crockett ISD. After high school, he enlisted into the United States Army in 1959. He was a trained marksman and was awarded the Expert Badge (Rifle M1). He successfully completed numerous service training courses and was being developed to become an officer.

George later moved to Grand Prairie, Texas in 1962 where he began to work as a skilled concrete worker. He met and married his first wife, Letta Mae Wheeler.

To this union one child was born, Georgia Ann Wheeler. Later in life, George met and married Doris Lee Richardson. To this union one child was born, Elesha Merritt. In this union, George was also the stepfather to Cassandra Mitchell, Sharon Reed, Darlene Lincoln, and Elroy Steward.

George was also the father of 3 children with Dorothy Day (Phyllis, Zelvin, and Gary Day).

Geroge is preceded in death by his parents, James and Jessie Mae; both wives, Letta and Doris; daughter, Anne; sons, Gary and Zelvin; and granddaughter, Jessica. George leaves to cherish his memories: daughter, Phyllis Day; stepchildren, Cassandra Mitchell, Sharon Reed, Darlene Lincoln, and Elroy Steward; grandson, David Brandon Wheeler; very special cousins, Don Marshall (Linda) and Brenda K. Marshall (Ken); as well as a host of other family and friends.
