Harold LaShaun Martin, affectionately known as Shaun, was born on August 23, 1978, in Arlington, Texas, to Harold and Novella Martin. He departed his earthly home August 3, 2024. Shaun accepted Christ at an early age, so since his physical life on earth has ended, it is the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for him with the Lord.
Growing up in the Dallas Independent School District, Shaun's passion for music was evident. His journey led him to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where he studied under Bart Marantz who was a teacher and mentor. He continued to nurture his craft at Weatherford College and the University of North Texas, where he earned a degree in music.
Shaun's musical prowess was evident from childhood. At the tender age of four, he began playing drums at Lighthouse Gospel Center under the leadership of Pastor Sam Nix, who recognized and supported his gift, requesting that he join the rhythm section at the church. He then began piano lessons under the tutelage of Ms. Carolyn Campbell, after Pastor Nix, recognized his extraordinary talent. Shaun dedicated a song titled "A Requiem for Carolyn" to his beloved piano teacher on his debut album, a testament to her profound influence on his musical journey.
Shaun's faith was the foundation to his life and career, so he made it a point to always volunteer his time at a church. His gift of leadership flourished at Friendship-West Baptist Church, where he led multiple music and arts auxiliaries as the Minister of Music under the visionary leadership of Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III.
Shaun's extraordinary anointing was also recognized while performing with God's Property, propelling him into the spotlight as a sought-after musician. This exposure led to a life-changing encounter with Kirk Franklin, initiating a long-standing professional partnership and enduring friendship. Together, they created groundbreaking music, earning multiple GRAMMY Awards. Shaun's musical genius also extended beyond the gospel realm, as demonstrated by his contributions to the production and recording of Erykah Badu's acclaimed album Mama's Gun while he was still a student at the University of North Texas. Snarky Puppy, which was formed at UNT benefited greatly from his exceptional talent, playing a crucial role in shaping the group's distinctive sound a leading to numerous accolades, thus solidifying his reputation as a leading force in contemporary music. He also brought his own unique version of Go-Go Music to Dallas-Fort Worth and beyond.
Throughout his illustrious career, Shaun traveled the globe and collaborated with a myriad of musical legends. His solo projects 7 Summers, Focus, and Three-O showcased his exceptional talent and versatility. A recipient of ten GRAMMY® Awards, Shaun's most recent win was in 2023 for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album with Snarky Puppy's Empire Central.
His belief in community service and his strong values also led him to become a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.
Beyond his musical and community accomplishments, Shaun was a loving husband to Monica Wilson Martin and a devoted father to their son, Harlem. He is survived by his parents, Harold and Novella Martin; sister, Stacey Martin; two sister-in loves, Valissa Jones and Michelle Wilson; three nieces, Oneishea Jones, Sydni Harris , Rikayla Faulkner one nephew, Maxwell Irving and a host of family and close friends.
Shaun's legacy as an anointed man of God, gifted musician, dedicated family man, and all around genuine, unique, wonderful person will continue to inspire and uplift countless lives across this world.
