IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen
Bratton
February 10, 1929 – August 18, 2022
Helen Louise Jones Bratton was born to Alice Laura Street Jones and George Grady Jones on February 10, 1929, in Indianapolis, Indiana. She grew up at 2937 Boulevard Place with seven siblings and attended Attucks High School where her picture remains on the Wall of Fame – Class of 1945. In 1950, she married Harold K. Bratton and they became parents to six children - Brenda Jean, Linda Louise, Harry Jerome, Brian Keith, Cela Denene, and Harold. She loved the Butler-Tarkington community in Indianapolis and worked with the James Whitcomb Riley School #43 where all her Bratton children attended school from kindergarten through eighth grade. She also loved the Church of Christ and made sure that all her children understood their places in Christian life while teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir at the Kingsley Terrace Church of Christ. She led her children to attend Sunday School and Vacation Bible School when they were very young. She was also a reading tutor at Public School #42. Reading was important to her and she used to say, "If you can't read, there will be many other things you can't do." So she read to her children on a regular basis – both from My Little Bookhouse Books and The Holy Bible - and made sure they visited the library often. In 2018, she began a fight for her life as illnesses and surgeries began to take their physical toll. Now, she will suffer no more. Helen Louise Jones Bratton leaves behind two sisters Dorothy Barlow and Norma Jean Smith, five children, many grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, several cousins, many nieces and nephews, many friends, and a host of Sisters and Brothers in Christ. She was a dedicated wife, a virtuous Christian, a wonderful neighbor, a great senior citizen, and a wholesome elderly person. She will be missed.
