James L.
Thomas
April 12, 2026
James Lee Thomas was born on February 15, 1942, in Colfax, Louisiana, to Mary (Tolbert) Wilson and Mr. Pearlie Wilson (raised him). On April 2, 2026, the Lord called James home, granting him eternal rest.
Affectionately known as “Rabbit” by his family and childhood friends, James received his formal education in the Dallas Independent School District. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Dallas, Texas. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army.
During his military service, James was deployed to Vietnam, where he served honorably from 1965 to 1967. His bravery and dedication earned him several distinguished honors, including the Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1967, having served his country with courage and distinction.
James met and married Evelyn Edwards; together they had one child, Richard Wayne Thomas. From then on, James moved to and was well known in the Hamilton Park neighborhood. He was lovingly known as “Long Finger James” and “Gold Fingers”. Those that knew him respected him and appreciated the genuine spirit he carried. He was always kindhearted and a true joy to be around.
Later in life, James met and married Sarai Salley, to whom he remained devoted until God called him home. Their union was filled with love, companionship, and unwavering commitment.
James leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of fourteen years, Sarai Thomas; one son, Richard W. Thomas; four daughters, Gabrielle Salley, De’Anndre Leeks, Destiny Lopez, and Symone Salley; three grandchildren, Richard Dawson, Jasmine Price, and Ti’Ara Thomas; and four great-grandchildren, Alijah Dawson, Josiah Price, Aubree Dawson, and Richard Dawson, Jr.
He also leaves behind his devoted sisters, Angela Wilson, Mamie Pauline Wilson-Woods, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
