Hawthorne
October 16, 1954 – May 24, 2022
Born the second Son to Parents Allen Willie and Margaret R (Lee) Hawthorne, who proceeded him in death; Larry entered the world on Saturday, October 16, 1954. His older Brother Jimmie Earl, also preceding him in death, would often tell the story of how excited he was to have a new brother because, before the arrival of Larry, he was the only boy in the family with five sisters. So, Larry's arrival into the world was met with excitement and enthusiasm. He was raised in the church with a strong belief in God. He attended Evening Chapel A.M.E., where he remained a member until his death.
Educated in Grand Prairie ISD. Larry was very athletic and played a variety of sports but excelled at Basketball. He played on many different Basketball teams and in tournaments. Accumulating many awards, accolades, and trophies as an outstanding player. He would later play basketball and baseball on his college team. He also served as a lifeguard for many summers at the local community Swimming Pool. As well as, serving as a member of the Dalworth Recreational Center.
Larry graduated College with a bachelor's degree in Education from Paul Quinn College (Waco, Texas) in December 1980 (Marching in May 1981). He was a very proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Iota Kappa Chapter of PQC. He pledged in the Fall of 1978. He embraced and strived to live up to the Alpha Phi Alpha objective.
After graduating from college Larry made it a mission to positively impact the lives of children. He became an Elementary School Teacher, Physical Education Teacher, and Coach. Beginning his career with Grand Prairie ISD and later taught at schools within the Dallas ISD, until his health demanded he takes early retirement.
He served as a Counselor with the North Texas Job Corps (McKinney, Texas) for a few years.
Larry was a member of the Bethsaida Masonic Lodge #168, where he served as Lodge Secretary. He was a Charter Member of Arthur L. Banks Chapter #143.; Royal Arch Masons; D.C. Collins Knights Templar Commandery #40. And a past member of Medji Temple #45 Shriners of Ft. Worth. He also served as one of the first advisors to the Knights of Phytagorus Masonic Youth Organization.
Larry had several accomplishments in his life before beginning his battle with Alzheimer's Dementia. He served many roles but was most proud to serve as Father to his four children: Latomai Davis; Zachary Z. Young; Matthew Hawthorne and Shakira Summers.
He was a staunch believer in Family. He loved his family and cherished many special relationships with his friends and Fraternity Brothers. He Leaves his six sisters: Barbara Jo Hawthorne; Margaret Biglow-Gipson; Sheira Price; Tywanna Luckey; Donna Danso and Tongia Stevens-King. His two Brothers: Allen Hawthorne, Jr. and Gary L. Hawthorne. 11 Grandchildren and Six Great-Grand Children. Along with a host of loving Cousins, Nieces and Nephews, and special friends that will all treasure the beautiful memories and moments shared with him. He treasured moments with his siblings: Jimmie Earl, Mae Katherine, Janice (Jan), and Kenneth (Ken), who all preceded him in death.
Larry departed this earth at 8:51 am on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. He was surrounded by his Children, Brother, Brother-in-Law, and three Sisters who held his hand as he transitioned to be with The Lord.
