IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marva Jones
Scurlark
November 3, 1946 – December 10, 2021
Marva Jones Scurlark was born November 3, 1946, in Grapeland, Texas. Her parents, Hebrew and Minnie Jones, were one of two families who attended the Church of Christ in Stanton, Texas. Marva was one of 10 children. Her father was instrumental in teaching her about God's love and goodness, and as a result of his teachings, she was baptized into the Body of Christ September 7, 1958, by Brother Elmore Johnson. As a young Christian, Marva enjoyed worshipping with her parents and siblings.
Marva played basketball in high school. Growing up, she lived only a block away from Troy Scurlark. They became childhood sweethearts, and on March 9, 1963, they were married. To this union four children were born: Troy, Jr., Merv, Prince Anthony, and Dilene.
Higher education did not come easy for Marva. She worked a forty-hour week while attending Odessa College. Marva worked for AT&T Mobility Bankruptcy Department. Some of her assignments included processing bankruptcy dismissals and discharges, filing proof of claims with the courts, and contacting customers who had filed bankruptcy cases. She was accomplished at using strategies to meet the customers' needs.
In 2000, Marva and Troy, Sr., placed their membership at GACC. She served the church family by preparing clothes for baptism and taught the high school girls Wednesday Night Bible class for many years. She was an active participant in the Young At Heart (YAH) activities. She and her husband were avid sports fans and attended Maverick basketball games with the YAH.
Marva also supported Christian education through her annual membership in the Greenville Avenue Church of Christ Bowser Associated Women organization and contributed to the College & Career Readiness Workshop Annual Imogene O. Cole Scholarship fund. She truly loved her GACC family and was faithful in attending services in person and virtually through online services.
Marva believed that being a peacemaker was not an easy thing, however, she was successful in this role, by bringing her family together to successfully sell family properties. She was very thankful for that accomplishment and everyone's cooperation.
For recreation, Marva walked through her neighborhood and on surrounding trails. To keep her heart healthy, she played in the swimming pool. Reading was her way of relaxing. Marva cared deeply about her community and strove to enhance the quality of life in her Mesquite neighborhood by attending quarterly Homeowner Association meetings. She liked to set daily strategies and believed that she could improve herself by seeking opportunities to encourage others.
To keep herself grounded in scripture, she relied on Matthew 6:33 which says, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you." Another favorite scripture was II Chronicles 16: 9, "For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him..." Marva often said that she was "more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus!" (Rom 8:37)
Marva was preceded in death by both parents; Sisters – Lila Jones, Reva Jones, and Frances Jones-Hammie; Brothers – David Jones, and L. E. Jones; and by one son, Prince, in 2005.
She leaves behind to cherish her precious memory – Her husband, Troy Scurlark Sr.; her children: Troy (Robin) Scurlark, Jr., of Mesquite, TX; Merv Scurlark (special friend Katie Ramey, and daughter Peyton) of Dallas, TX; Dilene Allen of Fort Worth, TX; eight grandchildren: Angela (Stan) Allridge, Dallas, TX; Chrysta Dalton, Dallas, TX; Prince Andre (Shelby) Scurlark, Dallas, TX; LaToya Scurlark, Denver, CO; Troy Scurlark III, Denver, CO; Quatrell Allen, Dallas, TX; Marissa Scurlark, Garland, TX; Anthony Scurlark, Spring, TX; ten great-grandchildren: Jhonnie Dalton, Kendrick Kennedy, Jona't Dalton, Daireon Valdez, Azarael Scurlark, London Scurlark, Malachi Scurlark, Ezekiel Scurlark, Braxton Scurlark, Collin Allridge; her siblings: Bonnie Chavez, Capitan, NM; Hebrew (Vivian) Jones Jr., Big Spring, TX; Lea (Michael) Spencer, Garland TX; Marvin (Danita) Jones, Spring, TX, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
