Obituary

Ravis Elaine Alexander was an extraordinary woman. She loved life and she most importantly loved her family and she loved to serve God.  She was born into the world on a beautiful Easter Sunday morning, April 16, 1944, in Clarendon, TX.  She was the fifth of six children born to Walter and Lois Alexander.  There was a 15-year difference between she and her oldest sibling, so she was the center of attention in the Alexander home for many years.

She attended primary school at North Ward Elementary in Clarendon and during the onset of the Civil Rights Movement her parents decided to send her to San Francisco where she attended middle school.  She returned to Clarendon to attend high school at Booker T. Washington. She was a member of the speech and debate team and was a proud member of the marching band as a Drum Majorette and boy could she twirl that baton, often showing off her skills to her family throughout the years.  During the fight to integrate schools, her high school was closed, and she was bused to Memphis, TX, to complete her senior year and graduate from Morningside High School in May of 1962.

After graduation, she attended the Coleman and Lockhart Beauty Academy in Dallas, TX, and passed The State of Texas Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Exam in April of 1964.  She then moved back to San Francisco where she attended San Francisco City College and started, what would eventually lead to a 32-year career, at Pacific Bell as a telephone operator. She was a member of Saint Beulah Church of God in Christ where she served as the 1965 Assistant Recording Secretary for the church.

While living in San Francisco she met and married Tommy C. Ransom Sr, in the Spring of 1967.  Together they shared three children, Latonya, Tommy II, and Shannon.

Ravis moved back to Texas in 1970 where she and her family eventually settled in Dallas where she raised her family and restarted her career with the Bell Companies in 1973 at Western Electric. She and her young family were members of Trinity Temple Full Gospel Church and in 1979 she later moved her membership to Victory Temple Church of God in Christ where she was a children's church Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Usher Board. She also attended Saintsville C.O.G.I.C and Kingdom Harvest.

After retiring in 1999 from AT&T, she found a new love, basketball. She was a huge Dallas Mavericks fan. She knew everything there was to know about the game, the players, and could call plays better than the coach at times.

Throughout her life she was consistent in being someone who was always giving back and helping others, giving food, clothes, and shelter to those in need.  She was the definition of a true grandmother affectionately known as "Granny", she loved and wore the title with pride.  She will forever be missed.

Forever left to cherish her memory are her three children, Latonya Ransom, Tommy C. Ransom II, and Shannon McGarry (Willie). Her seven grandchildren, Jordan Ransom (Jurnee), Jade Ransom, Jasmine Qualls, Jerrit Judie (Mikaela), Cydnee Lacy, Maliyah, and Madisyn McGarry; six great-grandchildren, Jaden, Kai, Naya, Kayleigh, Tegan, Jordan II; two sisters, Jean Nobles and Carylon Alexander; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and close friends.
