Obituary

Shannon Surles, our beloved father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at his home in Arlington, TX, at the age of 65.  Shannon was born to Chester and Berniece Surles on September 14, 1955, in Saginaw, MI.  A 1973 graduate of Saginaw High School, Shannon was 7 of 12 children, 6 boys, and 6 girls.

Shannon retired from his career at General Motors after 35 years of service in Saginaw, MI, Shreveport, LA, and Arlington, TX.  During this time he also served as a faithful UAW representative.  After his retirement, Shannon dedicated his life to helping young boys and girls in the community by working as a Teacher's Aide in the Mansfield Independent School District, Mansfield, TX, where he retired after 10 years of service.

Shannon loved to tell jokes and he was always the life of the party. He loved to spend time with his family and was greatly loved by them.  For many years, Shannon's home was the gathering place for the family's annual Easter weekend event.  Family and friends from near and far would come to the Dallas/Arlington area to eat, reminisce and enjoy one another's company, all brought together by Shannon's welcoming heart.

Shannon accepted Jesus as his Savior as a child and grew up worshiping at the Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church in Saginaw, MI.  Upon moving to Arlington, he joined the Word of Truth Family Church and served as a faithful member.

He loved all of his family members and never missed a family reunion or celebratory event.

His memory will be cherished by his son Jason Maurice Surles, Lewisville, TX, granddaughters Jakiyla, Riley, and Maali Surles, and grandson Jason Surles, Jr. ten brothers and sisters Sue McDole, Austin, TX, Louise Clarke, Grand Rapids, MI, Janie Cork, Saginaw, MI, Chester (Arlonia) Surles, Saginaw MI, Grady (Bobby) Liddell, Park Ridge, IL, Stephanie Crockett, Flint MI, Marvin Surles, Plano, TX, Leon (Elicia) Surles, Murphy, TX, Keith (Rosemary) Surles, Houston, TX, and Michael (Carletta) Surles, Lithonia, GA, lifelong friend Calvin (Ann) Payton, Grand Rapids, MI and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
