Obituary

On Friday, June 20, 2025, our daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend to so many, Tonya Michelle Powell-Wilson received her wings, and is now with our Heavenly Father. Rest in total peace.

Tonya was born January 21, 1974 in Taylor, Texas to Gentry Powell, Jr. and Rosie Johnson Powell. Tonya and her family resided in Bartlett, Texas and at the young age of 5 years old, was baptized at Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church. Tonya also was a member of Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Amarillo, Texas and a current member of St. John Church, Grand Prairie, Texas.

Tonya attended Bartlett Grammar School and when her family moved to their new home in Amarillo, Texas, she would continue her education at Whittier Elementary, Travis Jr. High and Palo Duro High School. While in high school, Tonya, enjoyed cheerleading. As a high school senior, Tonya, was crowned "Miss Juneteenth Amarillo. She earned the title by performing a beautiful rendition of Dr. Martin Luther King's " I Have a Dream " speech. She would graduate from Palo Duro High School in 1992. Tonya would go on to attend Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, receiving her bachelor's degree in Family Studies. Later, she would earn her master's degree in social work, MSW at University of Texas at Arlington (UTA).

During her time at Texas Tech, Tonya was very active on campus. She became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., (AKA) Chapter Zeta Tau and performed countless community activities. As an AKA, Tonya would develop so many life-long friendships and relationships, yet none would be as loving and more rewarding as the one she developed with her husband, Mark Wilson. Tonya and Mark met on the campus of Texas Tech. Their three-year relationship would inevitably lead to a marriage proposal, a storybook wedding, and the building of a beautiful life together.

In 1998, Tonya would begin an illustrious and lifelong career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In 1998, as a Student Trainee, Tonya worked in Case Management at FMC Fort Worth; In 1999, she promoted to Full- time status as a case Manager, where she worked until 2008 at FMC Carswell; In 2008, Tonya promoted to Assistant Case Management Coordinator, FMC Fort Worth; 2011 Tonya became a Unit Manager, FMC Fort Worth; 2013 she promoted to a Correctional Program Special-ist, South Central Regional Office; 2020 she accepted a position as the CIMS Classification Spe-cialist, Central Office/Grand Prairie/DSCC. Tonya would retire December 29, 2023, after 25 years of service with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Tonya Michelle Powell and Mark Anthony Wilson would wed October 3, 1998. They celebrated 26 years of marriage together. They would welcome 2 beautiful daughters, Kennedy Loreal and Kamryn Gabrielle. They would see their dreams fulfilled with both daughters enjoying high school and university honors on the basketball court; both earning full basketball scholarships to the colleges of their choice. Kennedy received her master's degree in science and Learning Technology and Design from Houston Baptist University and Kamryn is presently a sophomore attending Lamar University. Both, eternally, the "heartbeats" of Tonya and Mark's lives.

Tonya loved being a social butterfly. She enjoyed, concerts, Broadway shows, reality TV shows, and according to her sisters, "boppin" around the town. However, she loved nothing more than being involved in her daughter's high school and AAU Basketball journeys. She loved going to the tournaments and championship games, cheering on her daughters.

Tonya is survived by her loving and devoted husband and daughters, Mark Wilson, Kennedy and Kamryn Wilson, Grand Prairie, TX; parents, Gentry and Rosie Powell, Amarillo, TX; sister to Jennifer Powell-Wells (Giovanni) and son Michael Gentry Custis Wells, Mansfield, TX; sister to Chrystal Powell, and son Donivhan Mekhi Patterson (Desmond), Desoto, TX; sister to Courtney Powell-Mattheis (Chris) and sons, Cole, Chase and daughter, Courtlyn Mattheis, Palmdale, CA; God brother, Marlin Allen (Kamace) Forney, TX; 2 God daughters, Trinity and Tierney Leonard, Woodland Hills, CA; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, classmates, coaches, and basketball moms.
