Obituary

Verna Mae Scott was born August 30, 1938 in Henderson County to Vernon and Margean Wair. She received her primary education in Rusk County Schools.  She later moved with her family to Fort Worth, Texas.  She attended and graduated from the Ft. Worth School District.  She married Zephry Lee Scott on April 20, 1961.  God gifted eight children to this union.  They moved to Dallas, Texas in 1963.

Verna, Verna Mae, Vern, Nap, Aunt Vern, Momma, Granny, Ms. Scott… She, like her mother, carried many names. Verna was greatly loved.    Everyone knew the Scotts, especially "Aunt Vern".  She was respected and she was everybody's "momma".

She was an active mother in the lives of her children.  Football, basketball, band or ROTC, she supported each of her children's extra- curricular activities.  She was a member of the Band Booster Club at Wilmer Hutchins High School where her children attended.

Verna was a resident of the College Park Community for over 50 years. She and her family moved to the community in 1967.  She joined the College Park Baptist Church and was a faithful member until her demise.  During her membership, she was an usher and served with the hospitality committee.  Both the community and the Church knew of and loved her delicious cooking.

She was a hard worker. She was employed as a cook at The Meadows Building.   She worked at Buddy Schoell Kopf, Campbell Manufacturing and finally Fujikoki until she retired in 2001.

After retiring she didn't stop "working".  She enjoyed her Seek-n-Find puzzles, cross-word puzzles and brain teasers, all of which kept her mind sharp.  She was actively involved in senior activities at The Cross Family Center, that she affectionately called "the club".   There, she enjoyed arts and crafts, dominoes and bingo; she was a two-time First Place Bingo winner.  She enjoyed the many friends she made at the center.  Each not only knew her as a friend but also as a great cook.  She often prepared dishes for the group on special occasions.  She was the "famed" cornbread dressing maker.    She enjoyed the senior citizens' trip to the Anatole for their annual luncheon, dressed to the Nines; she always had a great time.

Verna enjoyed "the club" but nothing entertained her more than her favorite sports: Football, basketball and baseball.  She was a major sports fan and she loved her home teams:  The Dallas Cowboys, "How 'bout dem boys?"  The Maverick, and The Texas Rangers; she was quite fond of Nolan Ryan.

One of Verna's favorite songs that she loved for her church choir to sing was "There's a Leak in This Old Building".   She understood that if our earthly house of this tabernacle be dissolved, she had a building of, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Verna knew Jesus; she was a woman of prayer.  During family visits she would often request for us to pray.  On the day of her departure she prayed with one of her grandchildren.  We don't know exactly what she prayed but we know her desire was to be laid to rest next to her son, David. She went home to be with the Lord on his birthday.  One of her favorite hymns was "Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah".  The Great Jehovah saw that she was weak, held her with His powerful hand and guided her over. Verna and son reunited.  What a celebration, to be present with her son and with her Lord.

Verna is preceded in death by her father Vernon Wair; mother Margean Stanley; two sisters: Georgia Brookins and Doris Wair; brother Daryl Wair; son David Scott; daughter Sheila Davis and grandson Stephen Dewayne Scott.

She leaves to cherish her memories and continue her legacy six children: Brenda, Kenneth (Alice), Stephen (Patricia), Cedric (Patricia), Lesa and Christopher (Carmelle); twelve grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; five sisters: Bonnie Jackson, Mary Baker, Wander (Chris) Hunt, Brenda Wair and Elaine Wair; one brother: Maurice Wair and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends .
