Born in Granger, Texas, Willie Ruth was the daughter of Author Ross, Sr. and Rutha Ross. She was one of ten siblings, including Author Ross, Jr., James Ross, Peggy Thibodaux, Troy Ross, Effie Anderson, Robert Ross, Kenneth Ross, Norma Jean Ross and William Ross.

Willie Ruth was a devoted mother to her four children, Harvey Washington, Jr., Eartha Washington, DeRose Washington, and Rena Cooke. She was also a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother who adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
